United Way of Madison County has once again joined forces with Jumpstart Read for the Record, a national program in its 14th year, which promotes literacy for children pre-kindergarten through second grade. We need YOU to be part of the team for 2019!

What is Jumpstart Read for the Record?

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® is an annual program launched over a decade ago to highlight the importance of building early literacy and language skills for EVERY child, so that all children can succeed.

Each year, on one specific day, millions of children and adults are brought together to read in classrooms, libraries, community centers, and homes across the world. Each year, Jumpstart selects one children’s book as the catalyst for Read for the Record. This year, Thank you, Omu, by Oge Mora, is the Caldecott Honor Book and the Non-Violent Social Change Coretta Scott King award winner we will be reading and sharing with young children.

Local Read for the Record Details

When: Thursday, November 7th, the book will be read throughout Madison County and around the world! The deadline for Madison County registration is September 6 in order to allow enough time to obtain the books.
How You Can Help:

• TEACHERS: Register today so your class will be able to participate in this wonderful program. Each classroom will receive a copy of Thank You, Omu for their room library.
• PARENTS: Tell your school and volunteer to read in your child’s classroom! You can email this article to your child’s teacher. Just be sure to do it before Sept. 6th. Sign up to read here!

Who Can Participate: Pre-schools, parent-child groups, home schools and any gathering of Pre-school through Grade 2 children, and their adults, can participate. Just be sure to register by September 6th.

We need local readers all over Madison County on November 7th! Parents, elected officials, community leaders – anyone who would like to volunteer for this fun day can do so HERE.

The book is available to each classroom or group as a gift from United Way of Madison County, and is available in both English and Spanish. Each group receives a book and activities so that this day of literacy and sharing grows for each child. United Way can also help provide a guest speaker if that is desired by your group there are readers available in both English and Spanish.
