Parent Review : Las Trojas Cantina

Las Trojas Cantina recently opened its fourth location in northern Madison, on U.S. 72 in the building that most recently housed the Thai restaurant Surie. Las Trojas is a full-service Mexican restaurant that has been rather popular since it opened late last year. Lea, the boys, and I were early enough on a Friday night to avoid a wait.

If you ever visited any of the previous restaurants in this location, you’ll be amazed by the transformation in décor and atmosphere. The enormous light fixtures play against an indirectly-lit ceiling that does a good sky impression. There are whimsical little touches everywhere. We all loved being in this space.

We were seated promptly in a booth and began perusing the large menu. All of the Mexican restaurant standards are here, along with an extensive selection of house specials. Chips and salsa arrived just as I spied table-made guacamole on the menu. Yes, please! Our server took our complete order and left to fetch drinks and guac fixins.

Las Trojas Chips

While we waited for her return, we enjoyed the warm and obviously fresh chips with the flavorful salsa. The salsa is of perfect consistency: thin enough to cover the chip effectively, but thick enough to stay on it (and off the table, your shirt, and so forth).

When the guacamole was ready, we had to get more chips because I refused to leave any of it on the table. It was absolutely delectable and a steal at $6.79.

Our Las Trojas Entrees

For dinner I had shrimp enchiladas, served on fresh corn tortillas with the house hot sauce. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and seasoned, with the hot sauce offering a piquant punch of chipotle and garlic. Around the table Lea spoke highly of her chicken enchiladas, but it was my son’s Texas Nachos that captured most of the conversation. With grilled steak, chicken, and shrimp, and accompanied with sour cream, guacamole, cheese dip, and pico de gallo, they were amazing.

Las Trojas also offers several different vegetarian entrées, including burritos, enchiladas, and even vegetarian fajitas featuring mushrooms and zucchini.

Las Trojas Entree

The full menu is something to behold, and is capable of providing unique dinners for months. There is something for every taste and pocketbook. Entrees start in the $8 range, with many a la carte selections less than that. Even the dearest specials still come in under $20. So, Las Trojas is more budget-friendly than you might think.

The full bar includes several house specialty drinks. Desserts include Mexican favorites like sopapillas and churros, as well as several cakes and pies. We shared the churros, which were served with ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate. They vanished quickly.

Las Trojas Kid’s Menu & Amenities

There is an extensive kids’ menu for 12-and-under visitors (or diners of any age may order off the kids’ menu for an extra $1.49). Many selections are based on the regular menu. There are also standbys like hamburgers, hot dogs, and macaroni & cheese. Highchairs and booster seats are available. Restrooms are clean and well-stocked, but do not have changing tables.

Everyone at Las Trojas was friendly and capable, and our service was excellent. It was a wonderful place to spend a festive evening with the family, and would serve equally well for a girls’ or boys’ night out.

I’ve written before of the Huntsville area’s apparently infinite capacity for Mexican restaurants. Here is another one for which we will make room in our rotation. You should too!
