Families in North Huntsville have something big to celebrate this week that’s been over six years in the making! The new North Huntsville Library is open in the newly-renovated Dr. Robert Shurney Legacy Center at the intersection of Sparkman Drive and Pulaski Pike, formerly the Berachah campus. The $11 million project includes the gorgeous 19,000-square-foot library as well as a new park and playground with walking trails, an outdoor fitness center, and pickeball courts.

What’s New & Different at the North Huntsville Library

First, there’s the new name. The library formerly known as Bessie K. Russell Branch is now much bigger and is officially the more regionally-named North Huntsville Library. There are SO MANY wonderful new features – a workforce development lab, interactive literacy center, makerspace with the latest technology, community rooms, cafe, and a truly awesome children’s area.

That Amazing Kid’s Section!

Parents will quickly discover this could become your child’s favorite place! In the Kid’s Area, the book shelves are at kid-height, making it easy for both Little Ones to choose books and parents to see their kids in the stacks. There are plenty of colorful tables and comfy chairs to sit and ready in, several of which are also kid-sized.

Designated computers for kids will only have kid-friendly games already uploaded to the home screen. Catalogue kiosks are found throughout for easy item lookup, and the Youth Service Librarian, Ms. Mandy, has her own circulation desk right there in the Kid’s Area if you need help.

Kid’s Crafts-to-Go are available until programming starts back up.

Library storytimes and events for kids also have their own separate meeting space off of the Kid’s Area. The exterior wall is all glass and looks out onto the playground, letting in lots of natural light. Of course, visiting the park after you check out your books and movies is a MUST! Parents will also love the family bathroom and changing stations available in all restrooms. There’s even a cafe area with vending machines if you have a snack attack or want to meet playgroup friends for an early lunch.

But What About Teens?

Teens and tweens have their own space here too, adjacent to but away from the Kid’s Area. A Young Adult game/study room is a welcome addition and the Makerspace Lab is a huge draw! Teens and adults alike can make a reservation to learn how to use the 3D Printer, Cricut & sewing machines, and audio/video recording studio. Just imagine how many TikToks you can make…
