Welcome to our monthly roundup of Madison Family Fun! Each month Melissa be delivering fun and family-friendly events in Madison, AL to busy parents there. Of course, our specialty is free/cheap things to do in Madison but the ultimate goal is spending time together in your community. Enjoy!

After a soggy and gray February, I’ve got my fingers crossed that the weather improves in March. My family is ready to get outside and play, and I’m sure yours is too. Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor activities, there’s plenty for you to choose from in March. If you’re looking to learn a new skill, hit the road running, read some good books, or just plain celebrate, you’re sure to find a family-friendly activity in Madison to suit your needs.

  • Late registrations for Madison Softball are open until March 4.
  • Madison City School Spring Break runs March 18-22.
  • Infant Swim Rescue (ISR) classes for children ages 6 months to 6 years are now available at Dublin Park. Contact Certified Instructor Kimberly Shaw.

As part of Asbury’s Imagine Initiative, we are partnering with Drake State Community and Technical College which offers free GED classes at the Asbury Farmhouse. Classes meet on Monday and Wednesday nights from 5:30-8:30pm and include free childcare and a meal before each class. There’s a lot for teens and adults to see and do at The Studio, so get started by attending orientation to the Madison Library Makerspace! In this weekly program for we’ll introduce and demonstrate 3D printing, CNC machining, creative design software, and other Studio equipment. We will also cover mandatory safety training and go over ideas for future projects. Once you’ve been introduced, you can come back and get to know The Studio even better.

Poetry Reading with Jennifer Horne, Poet Laureate of Alabama

Jennifer Horne is Alabama’s new Poet Laureate. She has two poetry collections, including Bottle Tree and The Little Wanderer, as well as a book of southern fiction, Tell Them to Call You a Wildflower (UA Press). She has edited numerous books, including Working the Dirt: An Anthology of Southern Poets. Jennifer has taught children, university students, writers, and aspiring writers. Most recently, she was the Visiting Poet at Lenoir-Rhyn University in North Carolina. Jennifer will read from her latest poetry collection, Borrowed Light (Mule on a Ferris Wheel Press) in the auditorium of the Madison Public Library. This library event marks the release of Borrowed Light. Jennifer lives with her husband, Don Noble, near Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The library’s 3D Printer has gone haywire and is going to print a jail around the whole building, trapping everyone inside! You and your team will need to solve the clues left by the mysterious Dr. Filament to stop the 3D Printer and save the library; but hurry, you only have 45 minutes to find the solution. It is recommended you arrive 10 minutes before your time. We cannot accommodate late arrivals – if you do not arrive on time your space may be given away to a waiting player. Cardboard Boat Regatta

Sailors, start your paddles! It’s time for the inaugural Madison Parks and Recreation Cardboard Boat Regatta! Gather your crew, coordinate your outfits, and con-struct your floating masterpiece made entirely of cardboard. An enthusiastic crowd will gather to watch as your adventurous team paddles across the Dublin “Outdoor” Pool (inside the Dome). Each team will consist of 2 members in the following categories: Youth (ages 8-12), Teen (ages 13-17), Adult (18 and up), and Family (1 adult and 1 youth). The Cardboard Boat Regatta will be held on Saturday, March 30th, 2019, with the boat racing starting at 10:30am. Awards will include Pride of the Regatta (most spectacular boat entry), Best Dressed (most creative costume), Spirit Award, Titanic Award (most valiant effort to keep boat afloat while sinking), and race winners in each division. The cost is $20 per team, and each boat can only race in ONE division. Author Fair

Join us at the Madison Public Library for a Madison Author Fair!
The fair will start at 1 pm with a short panel discussion with a some local authors discussing their books and how their stories get told. After the panel, authors will be available in the auditorium to meet and discuss their work. This is a partner event with the Madison City Sesquicentennial Committee.
