Welcome to our monthly roundup of Madison Family Fun! Each month Melissa be delivering fun and family-friendly events in Madison, AL to busy parents there. Of course, our specialty is free/cheap things to do in Madison but the ultimate goal is spending time together in your community. Enjoy!

It looks like winter has finally found us here in North Alabama! Never fear, there’s plenty happening in Madison this month to banish any cabin fever your kids (or you!) might be suffering. Whether you’re taking in a play, competing in a chess tournament, or developing new skills at the library, there’s sure to be plenty of events to keep your family busy in Madison this February.

  • February 15 is a Teacher Collaborative Day and a half day for students in Madison City Schools.
  • February 18 is a Weather Day for Madison City Schools… unless it snows before then and we need it!

As part of Asbury’s Imagine Initiative, we are partnering with Drake State Community and Technical College which offers free GED classes at the Asbury Farmhouse. Classes meet on Monday and Wednesday nights from 5:30-8:30pm and include free childcare and a meal before each class. Special Events in Madison

Loving Solutions Parenting Program

This is a 10–week FREE program for parents with children ages 5-10 years old in Madison City Schools. Please act by Friday, Feb. 1, if interested, in the email listed below. The class will meet once a week for two hours. This program is designed to improve both school behavior and grades. It focuses on the parental control issues of sleep, diet, structure, supervision, positive home/school communication, home learning activities, and developing homework behavior. It also addresses the needs of children with ADD/ADHD.

There’s a lot for teens and adults to see and do at The Studio, so get started by attending orientation to the Madison Library Makerspace! In this weekly program for we’ll introduce and demonstrate 3D printing, CNC machining, creative design software, and other Studio equipment. We will also cover mandatory safety training and go over ideas for future projects. Once you’ve been introduced, you can come back and get to know The Studio even better.

All Girls K-6 Chess Tournament

Quad chess tournaments involve a group of four chess players of similar abilities playing individual games of chess against each of the other three players. Every player competes in a total of three games, and the player that wins the most games is named the overall winner.

2019 Scholastic Blitz Tournament

Open to all public, private, and home school students in grades K-12. USCF membership is required to play in this rated tournament. Tournament will affect player’s Blitz rating only. Awards include 1st-5th place medals and Top Female medal. The deadline to register is February 8.

Madison City Kindergarten Chess Tournament

Machine Sewing 101

Join us in The Studio for this complete beginner sewing class. Bring your own sewing machine from home, or learn on one of the library’s machines. We will learn the parts of the sewing machine and how to thread and set it up, as well as cover the basics of pattern reading and complete a 15 minute sewing project.
