Let the Magic Begin at Fantasy Playhouse Academy

Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater and Academy was born in someone’s living room in 1961. At the time there was no theater productions for children in town, and a group of concerned citizens decided to take action. Their first show was “The Pied Piper of Hamlin” over fifty years ago.

For anyone who has ever experienced a Fantasy Playhouse show, you just know you’re in for a treat when you hear the audience chant the magic words to begin each performance – “1-2-3, LET THE MAGIC BEGIN!”

Today, Fantasy Playhouse remains a strong component of the Arts scene in Huntsville and Madison County, offering over 100 classes to aspiring young thespians and theater artists, and producing four quality shows a year for families to enjoy. Their annual performance of “A Christmas Carol” is a beloved local holiday tradition. Their spacious facility boasts 10,000 square feet, which houses rehearsal space, costume construction and storage, classrooms, and a scene shop. Arts education is an important part of their mission, and one they believe every child should have access to – scholarships are available to students, and show excerpts are performed in many schools, libraries, and public events throughout the year.

But amazing shows are only a fraction of what Fantasy Playhouse has to offer. Their Academy is a year-round theater school offering classes in the performing arts for ages five through adult. Besides the regular drama, dance, and music classes, they also offer stage makeup, sewing classes, and various technical workshops. There are many Kindermusik classes also available year-round. Registration for Winter 2013 classes are going on now, and classes start January 22nd and run through April 29th.

Repunzle 2

My VERY hammy seven year-old son attended a class last summer and loved it so much we enrolled him in Fall classes. His teacher, Joan Leggett, is a veteran Huntsville actor and storyteller, and taught her students how to get into character, deliver a monologue (a great skill to have for book reports!), improvise a scene, and project their voices. My son is looking forward to learning more about auditioning in the Winter session.
