Know Your Vote: Teddy Powell, Madison City Council District 3

Teddy Powell

With the goal of keeping local parents (and voters) as informed as possible about all things parent-related, the editors of Rocket City Mom compiled “4 Questions for the Candidates”. We asked all the Huntsville City and Madison City candidates to answer the same four questions, and have published their responses unedited and as they have sent them to us.

Get to know a little about each candidate and where they stand on serving local families in our full Know Your Vote series. We encourage all of our readers to exercise their democratic right and vote on Tuesday, August 25, 2020.

4 Questions with Teddy Powell

Q. What do you see as the top three most pressing issues facing Huntsville today? What are your plans to address those issues?
1. Schools – Our schools are a major reason people choose Madison, therefore driving economic development in both commercial and residential areas. However, it is our businesses that provide Madison the opportunity for increased revenues in our diverse tax base and allows for expansion in education within our community. City leadership must continue to work with the Madison City Schools and businesses, as we have in the past, to balance growth and economic development.

2. Economic development – An increased and balanced sales tax base has been important for Madison to not be as reliant on home values (ad valorem) or economic swings. Additionally, I will continue to work towards a comprehensive and inclusive economic growth plan for the area to attract more businesses. Continued revenue opportunities, such as the Multi-Use Facility and lodging close to Highway 20, have provided for an increased tax base and will continue to attract tourists and visitors, without putting the largest burden of tax revenue on the current citizens. This revitalization and development have been key to increasing revenues in Madison.

3. Strengthening infrastructure – Our roads, multi-use paths, parks, and other essential investments allow citizens to move more freely as we grow and also provide businesses opportunities to move products and services. Therefore, providing a solid investment in infrastructure, along with schools, can and will be an asset for citizens, businesses, and a recruiting tool for the City to prosper.

Q. Why do you believe you are the right person for this office?
We need to continue to lead with strong, experienced representation and maintain the positive momentum we achieved from the previous Council to continue smart growth, increase economic development, and strengthen our infrastructure. I am the right representative to carry Madison forward. Right now, Madison is ranked the number 1 best place to live, to raise a family, and buy a home in the state of Alabama. That is not by chance. That is a result of what this administration has done, by working hard with schools and business leaders. We need to continue the progress, without radical disruption, and maintain the strong, experienced leadership that will carry Madison forward.

Q. As the incumbent, what new or existing initiatives do you look forward to working on?
We need to continue supporting our schools by maintaining the first-ever strategic, smart growth plan that was developed with input from both the School Growth Committee and the Board of Education to benefit our award-winning Madison City Schools and the City.

We need to continue strategic, smart growth by creating agreements that balance residential and commercial development, while reducing high-density neighborhoods through zoning. Also, we need to support revitalization of aging shopping centers and areas of commerce.

We need to continue increased economic development by recruiting new businesses to the area, such as hotels, restaurants, and small businesses, while sustaining and supporting our current businesses. In addition, continue to support our new commercial developments and the Multi-Use facility.

We need to continue to strengthen Infrastructure by providing improved infrastructure for greater quality of life in our growing city, to include roads, greenspaces, and recreation.

We need to continue to ensure information regarding projects and plans stay accessible and help citizens to have a stronger voice in issues that affect their neighborhoods.

Q. What is your overall vision/mission when it comes to families living in your city? What are your ideas about how to best serve them specifically?
The exceptional quality of life in Madison is what sets us apart from other municipalities. We have an opportunity to work together as families and citizens of this great city to support not only the schools and businesses, but also each other. My mission as serving as your District 3 Council representative is to help make Madison an even greater community so that our children will return to raise their children, with even better opportunities.
