The Huntsville Museum of Art’s Museum Academy has offered creative and engaging hands-on art classes for over 40 years. The Academy’s programs are held in two classrooms on the Plaza Level in the Museum overlooking Big Spring Park. Their schedule includes classes for preschoolers through adults. Find something to suit your interests whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist!

What’s the counselor to camper ratio? ​
One art instructor plus one-to-two volunteer assistants per 10 preschoolers (ages 3-5) and per 12-15 K-8 graders (ages 5-14) students in a camp or class. Classes are taught by experienced instructors and teaching artists who use the Museum – working in the studios to the galleries – as an expanded classroom.

Is transportation provided to camp? No

Camp dates: June through August 1st

What is the average cost of camp? There are a variety of classes offered that range from $55-$225.

What kinds of activities are offered at HMA camps?
Looking for something fun and creative to do this summer? Join us for STUDIO ARTWORKS by taking a class or camp (half-day or full-day)! All materials provided for the children’s camps and classes. All activities offered are safe, age-appropriate, and supervised at all times.​ Camps and classes include:

AGES 3-5:
The Education department will provide structure, fun and friends in a safe, stimulating environment. Museum gallery visits included for inspiration. All materials are provided for the children’s classes. Fee covers dates listed with each class.

GRADES K-8:
Each student attending a full-day camp will need to bring his/her own lunch and drink. Please no nut products. Students attending a half-day camp (9 a.m.-12 p.m.) or a full-day camp (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) will need to bring a morning snack. T-shirts are included with each art camp fee. Otherwise, a t-shirt purchase option is available for $6 each. T-shirts must be ordered at
least two weeks prior to the first class date. Please contact the Education Department at 256.535.6372 to order t-shirts.

What’s a typical day at camp like?
Students will enjoy learning about outer space art of galaxies, stars and the moon to the artwork of Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh and Andy Warhol to name a few. They’ll explore the Museum galleries to find a variety of artwork from paintings, drawings, sculpture and more. In classes they will create one-of-kind masterpieces using all different media from watercolor paint, pastel, marker, clay and more! They’ll explore the Stender Family Interactive Education Galleries – ART LAB and A Walk Through Time. Kids will learn about the basic elements of art: color, line, space and texture. Each camp and class will be a fun and interactive educational experience for all ages to enjoy this summer!

How can I register my child for summer camps or classes?
All materials are provided for the children’s classes. Pre-registration is required. To register, call 256.535.6372 or register online by selecting the desired class.
