Newsies Independent Musical Productions

After months of virtual auditions, waiting, rescheduling, and more waiting, the cast of Huntsville’s Independent Musical Productions has stayed the course, and will finally be able to perform the beloved Disney movie and Broadway musical, Newsies at the Lee High Main Stage Theatre.

Newsies Returns to a Huntsville Stage

Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right!

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe,” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.

Local Actors Ready to Go!

Newsies cast member, Simon Tsikalas, has been waiting for this moment since he was 11 years old.

“This show is very special to me because I have been obsessed with it for years. I discovered it roughly three years ago by watching the filmed stage show (now on Disney+), and after that I listened to the soundtrack everyday for months on the way to school and back. The music and choreography just blew my mind. When IMP announced in Summer 2019 that they were going to do the show, I knew I had to audition. And sure enough in the middle of lockdown they held virtual auditions. So I sent in a video of me dancing and singing, and maybe a month after that I got the call asking if I wanted to be in the ensemble.”

Simon and his castmates have been preparing for this show since last summer, and have faced delay after delay thanks to Covid. Originally slated to start in June 2020, Independent Musical Productions made the call to delay Newsies until it was safer to perform. It was the right one, but to a cast of young actors already struggling with virtual school and life in a pandemic, it was tough.

“I was so confident that we would perform the show in that September, it was kind of soul crushing to find out I’d have to wait almost a whole year to start rehearsing. But after waiting all those months, May came and we started rehearsing and it felt amazing. I know it’ll feel even more amazing to go from our rehearsal room to a huge auditorium stage filled with people.”

So grab your seats and let’s support these local actors and Huntsville theatre again!
