Attention all families with kids that have lots of energy and need a creative outlet for it… “Learning ballet is wonderful for children even if they never become dancers. It is wonderful because it teaches discipline, grace, and manners.” The legendary ballet teacher, Anna Paskevska, knew this was an active hobby that continues to influence kids long after their stage days are done. This summer, Huntsville Ballet School is offering camps that will introduce your child to the art of ballet, or develop an existing dancer’s abilities during the school break.

We sat down (virtually) with the Huntsville Ballet School Summer Camp Director, Rachel Butler, to ask a few questions about their upcoming camps for kids.

Is lunch or snack provided if a day camp?
Full day camps have a scheduled lunch time. Students provide their own lunch.

What is your camp’s predominant mission/philosophy?
Huntsville Ballet School is a 501c/3 nonprofit organization. The camp’s purpose is to teach the classical art form to dancers of all ages. Huntsville Ballet School offers a class for every level. Continuing dance training during the summer months is a great way to maintain and hone skills, as well as stay in ballet shape. With both daytime and evening options, we are certain you will find classes for your dancer. And if your child wants to try a ballet or jazz class for the first time, summer is a great time to experiment.

What sets Huntsville Ballet School summer camp apart from other area programs?
The arts are a powerful tool for fostering the development of the whole child. In addition to nurturing physical and mental health, regular participation in dance training supports academics, offers a powerful creative outlet, promotes mentorship, self-confidence and excitement, and encourages the growth of soft skills like creativity, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and time management.

What activity opportunities exist for your campers?
Huntsville Ballet School summer camps offer students the same standard of excellence in dance education as do our year round curriculums. Technique classes are lead by experienced teaching artists whose goal is to engage students both mentally and physically. We offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes in ballet and jazz, a tap class, and a stretch class for older students and adults. Our wildly popular Once Upon a Ballet Camp is perfect for ages 3-6.

What protocols are you following for Covid-19?
Huntsville Ballet School takes the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff seriously. We currently require face coverings in the common areas of the building and encourage them in the class, though they are not required during physical activity, where there is more than adequate social distancing. Procedures are revisited as needed. Please read our current COVID operating information and procedures at huntsvilleballet.org/hb-covid-19.

What advice do you have for parents looking for a camp for their child(ren)?
Summer provides the time to try new things or expand your knowledge of things you already enjoy. Look for camps that are run by experts in their field and that can provide a solid foundation. Bottom line, find camps that are a good investment in your children’s development… and fun!
