Looking for a way to wear out your kids of all ages? Tired of the same old pools and splash pads? Take a short drive to Hartselle and visit the Hartselle Aquatic Center! Located about 12 miles south of Decatur and about 25 miles southwest of Madison, it’s a quick trip for an afternoon visit. I headed to Hartselle with 3 kids (ages 14, 9, and 6) to explore one very hot and sunny afternoon.
What to Expect at the Hartselle Aquatic Center
There is ample seating, with lounge chairs spread all around the pool deck, as well as a raised sunbathing area in the middle of the pool. If you don’t have to be in the water with your kids, this is a great place for you to sit and watch your kids as they swim.
I was impressed at how clean both the pool and the deck were. After working at a pool for 6 summers, I know how quickly things can get gross. The deck was free of debris, and trash cans dotted the deck.
For Younger Kids
Under the huge umbrella you’ll find the baby area. With just an inch or two of water and several spray features, the littlest babies can cool off in an area separate from the rest of the pool.
The shallow kids area is zero-entry and features a small slide, water guns, and several spray features. My two youngest kids spent most of their time in this area. My kids also enjoyed sitting under spray jets on the ledge by the lazy river.
For Older Kids
The medium-depth pool area offers a large slide, which my bigger kids enjoyed. The deeper end of the pool offers plenty of room to swim and play, as well as a sunbathing area with lounge chairs placed on a ledge in the pool.
The deepest part of the pool features a high and low diving board, a slide, and a rock climbing wall. My teenager tried all those attractions and said the climbing wall is much harder than it looks!
Safety and Snacks
The water deepens gradually as you move around the kidney shaped pool, and water depth is clearly marked around the pool. Multiple lifeguards were on duty all around the pool deck. As a former lifeguard, I have high standards when it comes to this important job. The lifeguards were attentive and were constantly enforcing safety rules.
After several hours of swimming, my kids were begging for a snack. So we headed over to the snack bar, which offered an array of reasonably-priced treats and accepts either cash or credit cards.
Think your typical snack bar fare like hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, fries, nachos, and soft pretzels. They also offered sodas, candy, chips, and six kinds of ice cream in either cups or cones. The funnel cake fries smelled amazing. The kids chose ice cream, then “helped” me eat delicious pickle fries. Several tables with umbrellas next to the snack bar are reserved for eating.
The Aquatic Center opens Memorial Day Weekend and will be open to August.
The Pool also offers occasional Dive-In Movies. This event takes place after normal operating hours. Admission is $5 per person and gates open a half hour before the movie starts. Check their Facebook page for more information on the next movie event.
While You’re There
While we were swimming the kids noticed a splash pad up the hill next to the Aquatic Center. When they were tired of swimming, we headed next door to check it out. The SNAP Playground is an accessible playground and splash pad, and we enjoyed another fun hour as the littles ran back and forth between the playground and the splash pad. Plan Your Visit
The large bathrooms feature multiple stalls. Neither restroom had a changing table.
Outside food and coolers are not allowed. Bring cash or card to eat from the snack bar. Or pack a picnic and eat at the picnic tables at the SNAP playground and work up a sweat playing before heading over to the Aquatic Center.
Don’t forget the sunscreen! There’s little shade so you will definitely need to reapply to avoid a sunburn.
Bring your own float to enjoy the lazy river!
