Sessions are FREE and promise to be fun and educational as children, with an adult, explore and learn about the great outdoors. Most sessions are best for children ages 5-12 years, but all are welcome.
For all these events, children should wear old comfortable shoes and play clothes that can get a bit dirty.
Don’t forget a bottle of water. Your preferred insect repellent, especially on the lower legs, will help fend off unwanted insect bites. Children must be accompanied by an adult during the sessions.
SCHEDULE FOR JUNE:
Tuesday, June 4 – Scavenger Hunt – School is out! Summer is here!! No better way to kick off Play Days at Hays than with a fun nature scavenger hunt. Pick up your hunt list, marker and bag at the Terrame Natural Playground. When you return to the playground to show us your findings, we’ll have a special treat for you!
*Thursday, June 6 and Saturday, June 8 – River Kids – CONFIRMED REGISTRATION REQUIRED – Two separate sessions which both begin at 9:30am and end at 1pm. We’ve partnered with Alabama 4H and Alabama Cooperative Extension System to add this program for ages 9 -18 years, only. Wear water clothes and secure shoes that can get wet for a fun time learning how to kayak. The first hour is a mandatory safety class on land, so don’t be late. The remainder is spent in the water. All equipment will be provided. Participants must be able to swim to participate.
Tuesday, June 11, – For the Birds – While you enjoy the playground, drop by to make different types of birdfeeders to take home. We’ll have a few different ones to choose from to make.
Thursday, June 13 – Let’s Go Fishing – Bring your rod and reel, or use one of our cane poles! We’ll have the worms. Come ready to practice your catch and release fishing skills at Bar Lake. If you need a bit of help baiting your hook, just ask.
Tuesday, June 18 – Fairy Tales and Fairy Crafts – Our Little Free Library will have copies of short fairy tales for you to enjoy reading. We’ll use that inspiration to make fairy crafts while children, with their favorite available adult, explore the playground. You’ll leave with nature fairy wristlets and crowns that you design.
Huntsville Symphony Orchestra will also have their magical musical Petting Zoo on the playground to add to the fun.
Thursday, June 20 – Butterfly Bonanza — Tina with Butterflies by Tina will take us on a journey through the lifecycle of a butterfly. Learn about the anatomy of a butterfly using a larger than life-size model. There will be live butterflies to get up close to and learn some of the different types that you see visiting the Preserve and your yard.
Tuesday June 25 – Nature Art — Back by popular demand our watercolor in the trees event! Hint…you might have a whole lot of fun making your masterpieces. We provide everything when you drop in to let your creativity run wild. Wear clothes that can get dirty!
Thursday June 27 – Frogs, Toads & Turtles — They hop, they croak, they leap and love the bogs at Hays Nature Preserve. We will learn about these amphibians and reptiles on a short walk looking for them.
