Makers on the Mountain – A series of demonstrations of historic skills and crafts in our Historic Park.
August 3, 10am-2pm – Papermaking with Plants
Papermaking will be demonstrated using kudzu leaves (with kudzu likely planted by Dr. Burritt and harvested here on the mountain).
August 17, 10am-2pm – Wheel Throwing Pottery
Watch as ceramic pieces are made using a 19th century style kick wheel in the Potter’s Shed.
August 31, 10am-2pm – Basket Weaving and Cordage Making with Invasive Plants
The ancient method of creating rope and cordage using wild harvested plants and vines will be demonstrated. Handmade cordage is a versatile and beautiful way of using up unwanted plant material that can then be woven into basketry or used for a wide variety of craft purposes.
September 14, 10am-2pm – Plant ID Walks
Walk around the Historic Park and along the woodland trails to learn about wild and native plants and their different uses with a Burritt staff member.
September 28, 10am-2pm – Fabric Dyeing with Botanicals
Assorted nuts, barks and other botanical material will be used to demonstrate the process of dyeing wool and fabric with natural materials
