Described in the German press as “a shooting star in the truest sense,” Hungarian-American violinst Abigél Králik makes her HSO debut with Aram Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto (1940) – a virtuoso epic in which some have found evocations of the drama and expanse of the composer’s beloved Armenian landscape. The second of Sergei Rachmaninov’s three symphonies, the great E minor, was highly successful in its 1908 premiere and is recognized as a bold continuation of the Russian Romantic tradition he inherited from Tchaikovsky and others.
