Jazz in the Park- Huntsville (JITPH) has become one of the hottest summer concert series in Huntsville-Madison County. JITPH is a collaboration between the City of Huntsville Office of Multicultural Affairs and Magic City Smooth Jazz in collaboration with local partners including Lexus of Huntsville.
Magic City Smooth Jazz is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting cultural activities throughout the state through various styles of jazz in Alabama at no cost to the public. Bernard Lockhart serves as Executive Director. Since its inception in 2008, Magic City Smooth Jazz has hosted 150+ free concerts featuring 275+ artists and reaching 75,000+ patrons. Jazz in the Park- Huntsville is held every Sunday in September from 5-9 pm in Big Spring Park East, and the concerts are free to the public. The 2018 JPH concert series was a smashing success, and each concert drew audiences of more than 2500 attendees who enjoyed an afternoon of high quality music by local and international jazz recording artists. The 2019 concert series will be held September 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, and we are in the initial phases of planning an awesome lineup of performances.
We are happy to announce that once again we will partner with Huntsville City Schools to host post-event music education workshops. These workshops will cover topics such as improvisation, section playing, tuning, intonation, instrument maintenance and more. This opportunity to expose our local students to high caliber jazz recording artists adds tremendous value to our concert series. It is also possible that two additional performers will make themselves available to conduct workshops on the remaining weeks.
