Dvořák Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World”
Bernstein Halil: Nocturne
Copland Suite from The Red Pony
Though he was born near Prague and spent most of his life there, Antonín Dvořák is often included in programs of American music because of his crucial role in the young nation’s musical life: he was director of the National Conservatory in New York from 1892-95, and enjoyed exploring and encouraging America’s native musical traditions. Sonora Slocum, Principal Flute of the Milwaukee Symphony, performs Bernstein’s moving Halil, a nocturne dedicated to the memory of Israeli flutist Yadin Tanenbaum. Rounding out the program is well-loved music from The Red Pony, Aaron Copland’s score to a 1948 screenplay by John Steinbeck.
When: February 22 | 7:30pm
Where: 700 Monroe St SW, Huntsville
Cost: $15-86
