Event Series Event Series: 9-1-1 Festival (Haleyville)

9-1-1 Festival (Haleyville)

June 2 @ 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM

Free

Over fifty years ago, the first 911 emergency call was made in the United States and the call was placed in the North Alabama town of Haleyville. The Haleyville Area Chamber of Commerce and the town come together each year to host a two-day festival to celebrate the town’s role in making the first 911 call and to honor law enforcement and emergency personnel. Set for June 2-3, the 9-1-1 Festival offers activities for kids, street vendors, parade, live music, an antique tractor show, and more. Admission is free.

Fifty-four years ago in 1968, Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite placed the first 911 emergency call from City Hall and it was answered just a short distance away at the city’s police station by U.S. Representative Tom Bevil. The annual 9-1-1 Festival celebrates the history-making moment with a free family-friendly event. All activities are held in downtown Haleyville and festivalgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
