In today’s busy world, and especially in today’s lousy economy, many moms are trying to find a work/life balance that allows them time with their children and a flexible schedule. Often, women are choosing to go into business for themselves rather than return to the daily 9 to 5 grind. Direct sales opportunities (Scentsy, Mary Kay, Kelly’s Kids, etc.) are an option that allows the seller to make their own schedule and set their own pace. Recently, Huntsville mom and Discovery Toys Sales Consultant Wendy Johnson agreed to answer a few of our questions about her experience as a direct sales consultant. DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS AND HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN AT IT.
I am an Educational Consultant with Discovery Toys. Discovery Toys is a direct selling/party planning company that offers award winning toys, books, games, and music for all ages. I became a Consultant in June of this year.
WHAT LED YOU TO DECIDE THIS WAS THE BUSINESS FOR YOU?
I stay at home with my amazing almost 3 year old son, and I wanted to find a part time job for extra income and some “out of the house” time. After researching several direct sales companies, I came across Discovery Toys and realized they were the company for me. As a mom, a certified teacher, a former nanny, and former daycare teacher, one thing I know and look for are fun and educational toys! Discovery Toys believes in providing children with toys that encourage learning through PLAY!
EXPLAIN THE PROCESS INVOLVED IN DOING THIS TYPE OF WORK (i.e. EARLY STEPS, TRAINING, ETC.)
The first thing I did when I decided this was the job for me was get in touch with an amazing lady named Babs DiFrank. She has been with the company for almost 30 years and has been my source of information and my cheerleader. I had many, many questions and she answered them all with great patience and enthusiasm. Once my questions were answered, I purchased my kit, planned a business launch party, and got to work! Discovery Toys provides training for new Educational Consultants and the website is loaded with information and ideas.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?
My favorite thing about my job is watching children play! Their eyes light up when they see my table of amazing toys. Every child views each toy differently and will find their own way to play with the toys.
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB?
My least favorite thing about my job is people not realizing or respecting this is my job and a source of income. It’s very frustrating when someone expresses interest in hosting a party but won’t commit or when someone does agree to host a party and then cancels. I completely understand if an emergency happens, but otherwise I’ve already spent money on and committed my time to that party. When someone cancels I lose money and another booking.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE CONSIDERING THIS TYPE OF WORK?
You must be passionate about and believe in the product you’re selling. This is a job… you must work it to succeed.
