Dig Into Summer Reading!

At Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, we love summer and we love reading, so Summer Reading is one of our favorite times of the year! It’s a time where we invite all ages across the community to read for fun. And this summer, the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is all about encouraging some academic growth through science and reading!

HMCPL is very proud to announce that it is one of 8 libraries in the United States that has been chosen to receive an interactive display for children called Discover Tech. This interactive display brings the world of science and engineering to life for kids. There will be hands-on experiments, interactive quiz games, and science experiments at many of our library locations.

Can’t-Miss Discover Tech Activities:

  • Jitterbug Robots with Sci-Quest
  • Learn about circuits and make a robotic bug that dances!
  • Redstone Arsenal Science Extravaganza: what do they do on Redstone Arsenal? Learn about some of the fun science that takes place in our backyard. Ride a Segway, launch a Javelin missile, and play with an infrared camera!
  • Moonbuggy Science: meet the Moonbuggy and the kids who built it!
  • The True Life of a Test Pilot: who are test pilots and what do they do?

Of course you won’t want to miss the interactive exhibit itself. Discover Tech is a 750 square foot STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) exhibit. It will be at the Main Library from May 18-July 9. Think hands on science exhibits like you’d see at Sci-Quest, but at your Library! For more information about Discover Tech, check out the Library’s website at www.HMCPL.org.

If it burrows, digs, or tunnels you can bet there will be a program about it at HMCPL this summer!

Read Books & Win Prizes!

But don’t worry, the Library is not just about science! We love some reading too! The Summer Reading program is back and better than ever. The theme this summer is “Dig Into Reading”. Children can join the Summer Reading Club at any Library location simply by picking up their Summer Reading kit – that’s all! Summer Reading kits will be available starting May 28th. For every two hours kids read, they’ll be able to place an “ant” in our anthill. And at the end of the summer, kids will turn in their reading log for the chance to win some fun prizes! These awesome prizes have been donated by:

  • Tennessee Aquarium
  • Point Mallard
  • My Spirited Art
  • Huntsville Museum of Art
  • EarlyWorks Museum
  • Hogan YMCA
  • and Rocket City Mom!

And then there’s the fun Summer Reading programs: Every library location will have special programs for all ages from Monday, June 3rd until Friday, July 26th. Learn about the environment with Operation Green Team, extract strawberry DNA with Hudson-Alpha, learn about slimy worms with Huntsville Botanical Gardens, or see a live animal show with Animal Tales! Exciting programs will happen every week for kids and teens: and it’s all free! And don’t forget: every location will continue to have regular story times, clubs and crafts. Check with your local library to find out more or check the calendar at our website: kids.hmcpl.org.

So come join the Library for a summer of science, fun, and READING!
