Check out Books and Drop off Crayons

I’ve written on here several times about how the April 27th storms affected our beloved state and its citizens. I’ve encouraged you to give of yourself in whatever way you can and I’ve tried to do the same. Still, it just felt like it wasn’t enough. Then this spring I watched one mom in Decatur put together a festival which I was lucky enough to be a part of. I know another mom who is one of the driving forces behind a huge grass-roots effort to connect volunteers with need and to keep the volunteers coming for as long as they are needed.

School Supply Drive a Community Effort

Another Reason to Visit the Library!
Inspired by these people and wanting to find a way to help the youngest victims of the April storms, Rocket City Mom has partnered with the Huntsville Madison County Public Libraries to collect basic school supplies which will then be donated to both Keep Volunteering.org and The Josh Willingham Foundation for distribution to families in some of the hardest hit areas of rural Alabama. Drop off boxes are currently located at three branches of HMCPL: Main Library, Madison, Bailey Cove. Look for the gray boxes and drop off some new school supplies (we ask that they are still in original packaging). Signs are posted but if you have difficulty finding the boxes, just ask any librarian and they’ll be glad to help.

Make Giving a Family Affair

If each “fan” of Rocket City Mom spent just $5 extra during their next trip to Target, Wal-Mart or Staples, the difference would be huge! In this economy times are hard for everyone. For families that have lost their homes, finding money to buy school supplies can seem overwhelming. Take this as an opportunity to talk to your children about how they would feel in a similar situation and then make the shopping trip a family event. Even very young children will understand how exciting it will be for children just like them to receive new supplies for school. What a great way for everyone in the family to get involved in helping others in the community!
