Get Outdoors With Black Kids Adventures, Inc

At Rocket City Mom, we love sharing stories about organizations making a difference in our community. We asked Zenovia Stephens, the Executive Director of Black Kids Adventures, Inc., to share more about BKA’S mission and the impact of their work.

Black Kids Adventures, Inc. is a local non-profit that empowers Black and Brown families through outdoor adventures. We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to connect with nature, so we create welcoming experiences that inspire confidence in exploring the great outdoors.

Why It Matters

Nature can be transformative. Maybe it’s the peace from walking under a canopy of trees, the joy of hiking to a waterfall, or newfound confidence from standing on a paddleboard for the first time. These experiences help us reconnect with ourselves and each other. These moments are crucial for Black and Brown families, as history often excluded us from outdoor narratives. When we adventure together, we’re reclaiming these spaces and conveying the powerful message that the outdoors is for everyone. Since our founding in 2020, we’ve hosted a variety of activities, such as family paddling days, adventure camps, themed hikes, and family campouts at local sites like Selah’s Acres. Our events aim to reach people of all experience levels, provide space to grow and learn together, and ensure that everyone leaves inspired and excited for more. Families tend to leave our events feeling closer, with lasting memories, and as ambassadors, encouraging others to explore the outdoors.

By bringing more people outdoors, we’re also contributing to a healthier, happier community. Spending time in nature has been proven to have a positive effect on both physical and mental health, and these benefits extend to all who participate, in turn making Huntsville a more vibrant and connected city.
