Things to Do This Fall with Kids in Huntsville & North Alabama
Fall is in the air in Huntsville and Madison County, and if you love making lasting Fall memories with your family, this is the list for you.
So bust out the pumpkin spice, pull out your jeans from the closet, and get the whole family ready to celebrate cooler days, football season, costume-making, beautiful leaves, and one of the most exciting times to be in Alabama!

1. Stroll through the Scarecrow Trail
This one is a Huntsville tradition! Pick out your favorite scarecrow at the Huntsville Botanical Garden and even have a full fledged scarecrow day while you’re at it. There’s plenty of spots ripe for fall photos and it’s the perfect place to enjoy the cooler weather.
2. Settle in for Storytime
Curling up with a good story is a great, cozy fall activity. Our libraries have amazing programming for all ages, from the littlest book lovers to the grown-ups.
3. Head over to a Fall Festival
It’s festival season, and there’s plenty to enjoy in North Alabama. Whether you head to the Madison Street Festival for a day of family fun, tune in during the Athens Storytelling Festival, or catch a Harvest Festival, there are plenty of ways to get into the fall spirit.
4. Climb Aboard a Fall Train Ride
If you have a train lover on your hands, you’ll not want to miss the fall train rides at North Alabama Railroad Museum. Whether you catch a ride to the pumpkin patch or simply sit back and take in the fall foliage, it’s the perfect way to enjoy the season.
5. Pick Some Apples and Slurp on Apple Slushies
Sure, in theory, the weather should be cooling down, but in reality, we are in Alabama. The best way to beat the heat while staying true to fall is to sip on an apple slush. Head to one of the local orchards and pick a peck of apples that will make a perfect fall treat while waiting for that cooler weather to show up any day now…
6. Treat yourself to a Trunk or Treat (or two)
North Alabama loves a good Trunk or Treat. Put on your spookiest costume, grab your Halloween bucket and check out one of the many wonderful Trunk or Treats this fall.
7. Frolic Among the Fall Leaves
Fall in North Alabama is a gorgeous sight when the leaves begin to change. Take in the Fall foliage and soak in the cooler temperatures with a scenic hike among the trees. Grab your hiking boots and head over to our list of local trails to plan your next adventure.
8. Play with the Ghosts and Meet People from Huntsville’s Past
Head over to the Dead Children’s Playground at Maple Hill Park for some spooky fun. In addition to a day of play, this is the perfect opportunity to mix Huntsville history with a few ghost stories, too. Don’t miss the Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll on October 20 for a chance to “meet” some of Huntsville’s citizens from the past, like the Black Widow of Hazel Green, multiple Alabama governors, and even Lily Flagg the cow.
9. Pick the Perfect Pumpkin
Is it even fall if you don’t visit the pumpkin patch? Support local families at one of these North Alabama pumpkin patches and enjoy a day of family fun. Whether you’re wanting to meet new friends at the petting zoo, bounce on the jump pillow, dig in the corn pit, or get lost in a corn maze, there’s a fall farm for you.
10. Get Spooky During the Huntsville Ghost Walk

11. Watch the Witches Ride
