When is the Back to School Tax Free Weekend?

Go ahead and mark your calendars! Alabama will hold its annual sales tax holiday beginning at 12:01 a.m. (CST) on Friday, July 19, and ending at midnight on Sunday, July 21, 2024. This weekend, shoppers can purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing tax-free. Local sales tax may apply.

Tax-exempt items include the following:

Clothing

($100 or less, per article of clothing)
School clothes and uniforms are all tax-free during this time, but did you know that DIAPERS are too?

  • Coats, Jackets, & Raincoats
  • Diapers
  • Dresses
  • Gloves & Scarves
  • Gym Suits
  • Hosiery

Computers & Tech

(A single purchase with a sales price of $750 or Less)
For the exemption, a computer may include a laptop, desktop, or tower computer system, consisting of a central processing unit (CPU) and devices such as a display monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers sold as a computer package. Computer parts and devices not sold as part of a package with the CPU will not qualify for the exemption

  • Handheld electronic schedulers, except devices that are cellular phones
  • Personal digital assistants, except devices that are cellular phones
