Back to School Savings That’s Better Than Tax Free

With school less than a week away it’s time to start shopping for clothing and supplies. If you prefer to shop before or after the tax-free weekend in Alabama, here are a few ways you can save!

1. Shop the Sales

While there isn’t a coupon available for everything on your back to school list it’s definitely worth saving where you can. For example, this week at Target you can purchase Purell Hand Sanitizer for free, Clorox Wipes for $0.99 each, and save $5.00 off a $25.00 Cat & Jack brand uniform purchase. Don’t forget to scour the clothing clearance racks as well!

2. Remember Office Supply Stores

Staples and Office Depot/Office Max offer huge discounts on select school supplies. This week (ending July 30) at Staples you can pick up 4 glue sticks or a ream of copy paper for $0.01. At Office Depot/Office Max you can purchase 2-Pocket Paper Folders with or without prongs, 3”x5” index cards, a pencil box and mechanical pencils for $0.01 each with additional $5.00 purchase.

3. Don’t Leave Your Car

Have you tried Wal-Mart grocery pick up yet? If not, now is the perfect time to try. New customers will receive $10 off their first $30 purchase INCLUDING school supplies.

How it works: visit grocery.walmart.com and choose the pickup location most convenient for you. Create an account then sort at the top left by department and choose “Back to School.” Availability of items will vary by pickup location. Place $30 worth of items in your cart and click “Check Out” at the bottom right of your screen. Enter your payment information, click “Continue” and review your order. Before you checkout enter promo code: GETITNOW to save $10.00. This promotional code expires July 31, 2016.

4. After tax free weekend, shop the clearance sales

In a month or so, stock up for next year once school supplies are marked down to 50% off or more. Items like pencils, folders, and paper will always be needed (and will likely run out mid-year!). I was able to fulfill almost half of my boys’ lists from what I had leftover from last year’s clearance purchases. (Pro tip: glue sticks may dry out!)

Since tax free weekend is not too far past the first day of school you could wait on larger ticket items like computers, books and clothing until then. In the meantime, by shopping sales, using coupons, and saving where you can you may be able to save much more than 9% — and avoid the crowds.
