I was so excited for the taste of fall that we experienced last weekend. There was a chill in the evening air, friends were posting pumpkin recipes on Facebook and we spent several hours at the Redstone Arsenal Oktoberfest. Thanks to the local school systems, this year we are able to plan a Fall Break Vacation without having to pull the kids out of school! As always, the beach will be a popular destination. However, if you don’t want to vacation with the masses, here are a few other ideas for family bonding.

I considered myself a knowledgeable and seasoned traveler until March 21,2014 when I found myself in the cozy office of the German Bundespolizei for four hours. We had just landed and were excited to begin the Spring Break Trip of a lifetime. Aiden, super excited and independent, stood in line solo and proceeded to the […]
Seek and you shall find a little hidden gem of German Cuisine tucked in the corner shopping center at Bob Wallace and Whitesburg. I have lived in Huntsville since 5th grade and it was not until two years ago that I discovered Hildegard’s German Cuisine.
Earlier this week we had a taste of Spring here in Huntsville, Alabama. If you are like me, it also gets your mind to fast-forward to Spring Break. The most common Spring Break destination tends to be the beach. Unfortunately, the weather can be unpredictable during March and April at the beach, especially if you […]
Most of you know me as the travel guru here at Rocket City Mom, but in addition to spending money on travel the second largest expenditure for our family is food! I love to cook and enjoy eating, however, my goal is to feed my family healthy and nutritious meals without breaking the bank. I […]
You simply must add Mentone, AL to your selection of random towns on your Weather Channel app. Why, you ask? Well, if you plan on joining the many who have already experienced The Cloudmont Ski Resort then you know the magic overnight temperature must be below 28 degrees. You might think this is a joke, snow […]
The first step to travel with children is to RELAX! There will be hiccups along the way, and you can’t be prepared for every misadventure, so having the right mindset is key. A big part of the travel adventure is the journey… the way in which you handle these surprises can make all the difference. […]

With careful planning in advance you can continue your savings even once you reach your destination. Food to Fuel the Fun As mentioned in last month’s post, the easiest money saved is staying at […]
What would you say if I told you I booked three people from Huntsville, Alabama to Frankfurt, Germany for under $400 total? That I am flying seven of us to Chicago for $35 total? That we are staying in a hotel next week in San Francisco that runs over $450 a night for FREE? Like […]
Is your family looking for an outdoor adventure, maybe a waterfall to explore, but you don’t have the luxury of an entire weekend to get away? A trip to Gadsden’s Noccalula Falls may just be right for you. We enjoyed a leisurely drive, explored Noccalula Falls Park, had lunch at a pizza place called Stevi […]
Natasha and Lawrence McCrary have taken a family dream and created a new way of life. 1818 Farms is their dream come true: they have “a small profitable farm where we could teach our children to appreciate the land and animals and to be good conservationists.” Last weekend we had an opportunity to visit the […]
Summer vacation is my favorite time of the year. It is when the restrictions of travel are lifted for my children and we are free to go where the wind blows us! Last summer I decided to take the kiddos on mini field trips to keep things exciting and to explore the fun places that […]
I love hiking. I enjoy the serenity of the outdoors, and my legs can carry me forever – only one thing is missing… a good sense of DIRECTION! I do great on trails that I’m familiar with and trails that are well-marked. Those that require a mental compass are a bit more of a challenge. […]
In an effort to show my sons and their friends that fun CAN be had without being “connected” I hosted a campout adventure! A friend provided me with a tent – since this was my first time camping with the kids I didn’t really want to invest in a tent of my own. Plus, I […]

I was wrong. For over 30 years I have traveled the world utilizing all modes of transportation yet avoiding cruise ships. Why would I pay to be confined to a floating vessel with thousands of traveling strangers? The older I get the easier it becomes to admit that I made a mistake. Most vacations have […]
Do your kids LOVE having a sleepover? Do you find yourself stressed and anxious at the thought? Are you worried that the kids will destroy your home, or that you don’t have enough activity to entertain five children at home? This weekend I thought outside the box and invited four boys over for a new […]
