Welcome back to our quarterly roundup of Athens Family Fun! Each season our new Athens correspondent, Tabatha, will be delivering fun and family-friendly events in Athens, Alabama to busy parents. Of course, our specialty is free/cheap things to do but the ultimate goal is spending time together in your community.

Athens City Pool Opens

If you need a way to cool off in these hot Alabama summer days, the Athens City Pool is a great place to visit. They have a slide and admission is $3 for children 12 and under, $4 for adults, and summer passes for $60.

Cruise In on the Square
1st Saturday each month

Go check out some amazing rides, find something delicious from the food trucks or restaurants, and mingle to make new friends who also like to admire cool vehicles.

Athens Cinemagic Theater Summer Kids Movies
Tuesdays in June & July at 10:00 AM – More Info
This mom & pop movie theatre in Athens not only boasts a rad retro Drive-In screen, but also hosts free kid’s movies each Tuesday at 10:00 AM from June 22 – July 27, 2021. Please bring a canned food item per seat to donate to local food pantries. Doors open at 9:30 AM.

Marbut Bend Guided Trail Walk

This guided walk will be focused on plant life and birds, so you can bring binoculars to enjoy the birds at a distance, comfortable walking shoes and insect repellent.

KALB Outdoor Expo

This outdoor expo will have activities for kids, vendors with earth-friendly products, demonstrations, and fun for all ages.

Free Fishing Day

Take this day as an opportunity to take the kids fishing without a license in Alabama.

Truck Invasion On the Square

If you have kids who love trucks, jeeps and SUVs, you should take a walk around the Square from 6pm until 9pm.

Athens Juneteenth Festival

The Athens Boys & Girls Club is hosting a celebration in observance of the end of slavery in the U.S. along with food, vendors, music, art, and live entertainment.

Athens Kiddie Carnival

Isom’s Orchard U-Pick Days

Isom’s Orchard has U-pick opportunities throughout the year, and in July they have zinnias and sunflowers for $1-$2 per bloom.

The Athens firework show can be viewed from adjacent properties including Central Church of Christ, Athens Shopping Center, and Athens High School. Tune into Outlaw 105.1 for the music.

Shady Lady Trail Run

Featuring a 5K and 10K run starting at 8:00AM. Day of onsite registration starts at 6:30AM. 5K is $25.00 ~ 10K is $35.00. Groups for all ages! Awards to the top three overall finishers and top three in each age group.

4H STEM Workshop

Limestone County 4-H will be hosting a STEM workshop for youth, ages 9-18.
This event is free, but registration is required with limited capacity.

Piney Chapel American Farm Heritage Days
August 6-7 | More Info
There is something for everyone with a parade of power, fast crank competition, slow races, ladies’ skillet throw, kids pedal pull, flea market, antique vehicles and live entertainment. Friday morning at 10am they offer a 20 mile tractor pull through the country side.

Athens Public Library Presents ‘Tails & Tales’

Kick-Off Party
June 5 – More Info
The Summer Reading Kick-Off Party at the Athens Limestone Public Library is from 10am—2pm, with a Storyteller at 11am & 1pm. Get your reading log, Brag Tag Starter Kit, play some games & enter to win an iPad!

Weekly Events for Tails & Tales
June 5th-July 17th
Each day of the week is for a different age group so everyone can enjoy summer reading at their own level. Be sure to check out the butterfly exhibit. Registration is required and starts one week before the event takes place.

  • Monday – Mommy and Me | 10:30 — 11:30 AM | Ages 0—5 | Drop In/No Registration
  • Tuesday – Tweens | Ages 8-12 | 5:00 – 5:45 PM | Registration Required
  • Wednesday – Family Storytime | 10:30am and 1:00pm | Registration Required
  • Thursday – Teen Time | 7th-12th Graders | 5:00pm
