Happy July, RCM readers! I hope you’re enjoying your summer with your children and are finding lots of exciting things to explore! If you need a little help finding fun things to do in Athens, look no further. Our great town offers so many wonderful events for families, and summertime is definitely busy here! Art is a big theme this year in Athens, and there are lots of art-related camps and learning days just for kids. Also, if you haven’t gone to the Kiddie Carnival yet, make sure to check it out this month! There are also several fireworks shows happening in Athens on and around the 4th of July; read on for more information!

Athens Lions’ Club Kiddie Carnival

The Kiddie Carnival is a true, classic Athens experience! Kids of all ages will enjoy the carnival rides and games at the Kiddie Carnival. This is a great way to spend a summer evening with the family. Tickets are 50 cents each, and rides cost 1 ticket. Tickets can also be used to purchase concessions including burgers, hot dogs, cotton candy, funnel cakes, Dippin’ Dots, and more. Read the RCM Parent Review before you go!

Red, White, and Boom

The annual fireworks display at the AHS stadium takes place at dusk on Independence Day. There will be no stadium seating; viewers can park at the middle school, park, Central Church of Christ, or Athens Shopping Center. Alabama Music Series with Plato Jones

Athens Arts League presents a free community concert featuring local talent Plato Jones. This concert is the first in a series of free concerts put on by the League. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and appetite! The Spud Truck and Baldemar Tacos food trucks will be on site so you can enjoy dinner and a show.

LLCA Fundamentals Baseball Camp

Kids Art Classes at High Cotton Arts

Do you have a child who loves art? Would they like to learn more about painting techniques and grow in their love for art? Val Michael at High Cotton Arts in downtown Athens offers pallet classes for kids ages 7-12 every Wednesday in July. These classes will help your child expand their knowledge of painting techniques while having lots of fun! Students should wear old clothes or bring a smock, as they will be using acrylic paints. Themes for each class are as follows:

  • Fireworks – July 3rd
  • Garden Flowers – July 10th
  • Small World (Bees and Snails) – July 17th
  • Your Town Pallets – July 24th

Summer Reading at the Athens Library: A Universe of Stories

School is out, summer is here, and it’s time for the summer reading program at the library! The summer calendar at the library differs from the rest of the year, so be sure to check out the calendar at alcpl.org on the home page for changes to the regular story times and other programs.

All programs are free! The kick-off for the summer reading program is Monday, June 9th. Stop by the library to pick up your reading logs, enjoy story time from 10:15-11 AM, and watch the movie Space Jam from 1:00-3:30 PM!

This is a do-it-yourself program. The activities will be available at the front of the library all week long. Each week will bring new activities. Play Book Bingo, hunt for planets during the scavenger hunt, “Planet Passport,” make your own astronaut helmet, and so much more! These activities will be for all ages. Prizes will be awarded to patrons for the Book Bingo and Planet Passport. New activities will start on Mondays.

These activities will include a poetry wall, intergalactic coloring, and board games, available in the teen room all week long!

Space Academy

This is a program for students who have completed kindergarten through sixth grades. They will read stories, play games, do science projects, and make crafts! Get excited about science, space, and reading! Space Cadets will also get a Learning Extension where they can take home the learning and fun! For safety reasons, parent/guardian must stay in the Community Room with child.

Mini Moon Explorers
Wednesdays, 10:15-11:00 AM
Community Room, Athens-Limestone Public Library
This program is for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers (0 – 5 years old). During this storytime program, kids will read a book, sing songs, do finger plays, have interactive storytelling, and make a craft. Mini Moon Explorers will also receive a Learning Extension where families can continue the educational experience and fun at home. For safety reasons, parent/guardian must stay in the Community Room with child.

Teen Time
Thursdays, 3:30-5:30 PM
Teen Room, Athens-Limestone Public Library
This program is for students who have completed 7th through 12th grades. Meet new friends as you paint, cosplay, karaoke, and craft. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Spectrum Storytime
Fridays, 10:15-10:45 AM
Community Room, Athens-Limestone Public Library
Spectrum Storytime is a storytime program for children of all ages with special needs. It focuses on children on the autism spectrum. Join us as we read books, do finger plays, sing songs, enjoy puppets, have interactive storytelling, and more! For safety reasons, parent/guardian must stay in the Community Room with child.
