A Carnival of Books? Sign Me Up!

I know I’m a bit biased, but I love to see kids reading in the summertime. On the back porch, at the pool, or sprawled out on the couch, summer reading is a time when kids get to choose what they read and have the freedom to choose their titles without a teacher peering over their shoulder. It was one of my favorite parts of summer as a kid.

That’s why I’m super excited that the United Way of Madison County is hosting a whole Summer Carnival dedicated to books and reading at three different and simultaneous locations across Madison County. On Tuesday, June 11, elementary students can head to a carnival site and have an absolute blast… all while celebrating books & reading!

Activities at each site include a moon bounce, snacks and cool beverages, fire, police, and HEMSI vehicles and staff, guest readers in a reading nook, and Sci-Quest activities. United Way will provide a bean bag toss, and students can vote in a “favorite summer book” competition, create art at a coloring station, and more.

This event is for any elementary school child attending any of the three public school systems throughout Madison County: Madison City, Huntsville City and Madison County schools. Each child will leave with a goodie bag full of resources and even a book!

But it won’t stop there – United Way and its community partners will continue to promote summer reading at every turn all summer long because this is an issue worth convening our community to address – with summer reading our children will hit the ground running at the start of school, not having missed a beat.

Event organizer, Cathy Miller: “According to expert organizations such as Reading is Fundamental, children who do not read during the summer are likely to lose as much as two months of reading achievement or more. By the end of 6th grade, children who lose reading skills over the summer will be two years behind their classmates. By convening the community to focus on summer reading, and teaming up with all three public school districts and many local partners, United Way of Madison County is making this a county-wide focus.”
