Your children will step into the world of their favorite storybooks — building a snowperson and making snow angels in The Snowy Day, tucking in Peter Rabbit, and finding Spot. Exhibit experiences including matching, rhyming, poetry and storytelling all help set the foundation for becoming literate by encouraging children to love books, learn words, tell stories, read everything, know letters, and hear sounds.     This family- and dog-friendly event returns to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center! Enjoy the festive atmosphere with imported and domestic beers and delicious wines from the German region. It’s family-friendly and leashed dogs are welcome on our Apollo Terrace and in Apollo Courtyard. Admission is free, and food and beverages are available for purchase. To support our local community, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is featuring a nonprofit organization each week, and a portion of food sales that evening will be donated to the organization.

    The historic cooks of Burritt on the Mountain will transport you back to the 1800s with all of your senses as you see, hear, smell, and maybe even taste their work as they prepare historic recipes over our open fires and cast-iron cook stove. In addition, our blacksmiths will be firing up the forges throughout the historic park to demonstrate this fascinating skill. Blacksmiths were more than “horseshoers,” they were vitally important to daily life. Smiths could make all types of tools, including those used in cooking, accessories for the home, knives and even fashion accessories. Please join us for this fun-filled day in the historic park! You can even purchase some handmade items created by our very own blacksmiths in our gift shop!

    Curious about fly fishing? Ever wanted to give it a try but didn’t know how to get started? If so, join us at the Hays Nature Preserve Saturday March 10th for an introduction to Fly Fishing. TVFF in association with Huntsville’s Operation Green Team and Orvis Huntsville will sponsor an introduction to fly fishing Saturday March 10th from 9:00 am till 3:00 pm. Instructors will provide participants hands on exposure to the sport including a hands-on introduction to fly fishing, fly tying, and fly casting. Classes will be scheduled and repeated throughout the day so even if you miss the 9 am start you can still take part! Equipment and materials will be provided and there is no cost to the participants. No fishing license is needed to fish in the preserve Bar Lake, but please note that a license is required to fish in the river or any other areas of the Preserve. Children 11 and under must be accompanied by a parent.

    Don’t miss the Annual Spring NEACA Craft Show at the Von Braun Center in the South Hall. This annual show has more than 250 Vendors to shop from and features everything from home decor, dolls, pottery,  and embroidery jewelry, clothing, quilts, food and more. NEACA is a tax-exempt organization benefiting local charities since 1973 and has donated over 1 million dollars to local high school seniors and charities since it began.

    The Art of Dance Celebration

    Join us at this fun community event, where there’s something for everyone! Meet Cinderella, Prince Charming and other members of the Cinderella cast, as well as other professional company dancers from Huntsville Ballet. Enjoy mini performances by Huntsville Ballet Company, take a lesson and dance along with Cinderella, view original dance art and see a painting demo! You’ll be able to see gorgeous, professional ballet costumes up close, and there will be coloring contests for kids. We will also have live model sketching opportunity from 2-3PM, when artists and art students are invited to bring sketching materials and have the opportunity to sketch dancers in poses that will be held from 30 seconds to 10 minutes long.

    St. Johns Venture Crew 007 in Madison is hosting their 4th annual St. Patrick’s Day Pet Parade on March 18th from 2-4pm.  We will meet in the parking lot of Discovery Middle school on Hughes Rd.  After a short introduction, we will walk to Bob Jones High School and back. We will have water for people and pets!  Costumes and Irish dress is encouraged!  This event will benefit the Saint Vincent De Paul food pantry and Madison Animal Rescue Foundation. While there is no cost to attend the event, we will be accepting monetary and non-perishable food donations for both organizations.  We will collect donations rain or shine!

    St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl

    Downtown Decatur is ready to paint the town green and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with plenty of fun and entertainment that everyone can enjoy. Sponsored by Valley Budweiser and the DDMBA, Downtown Decatur’s St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl offers an afternoon and evening of street activities, live music and children’s activities. Streets will be blocked in the area of Moulton Street and 2nd Avenue. The full event will take place from 3-9pm, but from 3 to 6 p.m. there will be face painting, music, snow cone truck and other family-friendly activities available to the public.

    The National Children’s Advocacy Center has partnered with the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Von Braun Center, and Downtown Huntsville, Inc. to bring you a variety of great food trucks, drinks, and music on the steps of the Von Braun Center, South Hall Entrance. This event helps kick off our week of our 34th International Symposium on Child Abuse with child abuse professionals from all over the world.

    Get ready to soar! Mark your calendars to join us when the Southeastern Raptor Center from the Auburn School of Veterinary Medicine brings everyone’s favorite raptor show to the Garden. You’ll see some amazing raptors take flight and learn some interesting facts. This program is for all ages. The cost of this show is $3 per person along with Garden admission for non-members. It’s a great activity for Spring Breakers and a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a beautiful day at the Garden! Seating is first come, first serve. On March 28, we will read a story and discuss the exciting changes Spring brings to us, and afterwards, children will make a fun, colorful flower craft to bring home. March 29 features a Spring hike in the woods for ages 5 and up. With warmer weather, the animals will be busy, trees will have new leaves, plants will be growing, and flowers starting to bloom! March 30 is our Growing, Blooming, & Animal Nesting presentation, where our kiddos will have lots of fun learning how plants and animals adapt to Spring, along with discussing springtime weather. Afterwards, everyone will enjoy making a craft of “baby birds in a nest” in celebration of Spring!

    Wizard of Oz Character Dinner

    Join us for a taste of springtime as you visit our barnyard animals, experience historic skills, and learn about life on the farm during the 1800’s. This year we will have a few new animals visiting the park for this special event. Visitors are sure to be fascinated by the sheep-shearing and blacksmith demonstrations. Come observe wool being spun into yarn, give milking our faux cow, Boxy, a try, and help wash and card our wool. Learn what attending school was like in 1918 as you participate as a student in our brand new Rosenwald Schoolhouse. You’ll leave with a new appreciation for modern conveniences after trying historic tasks such as rug beating, butter churning, and mattress stuffing! Don’t forget the fun you’ll have visiting all the Folk Family Fun activities we have in our historic park.

Eric Litwin is a song singing, guitar strumming, # 1 New York Times Best Selling author who brings early literacy and music together.     This fun-filled day will feature many different activities for the whole family! The Marketplace will have vendors set up inside the Whitesburg Baptist Center for the family to shop around for many different things, and door prizes will be drawn throughout the day. Visit the Petting Zoo from 11:00 – 2:00 and the “Show and Shine” Car Show from 11:00 – 3:00. Carnival Games will be in the gym for the children to play, and tickets can be purchased upon arrival.     Captain D’s Castin’ ‘N Catchin’ is a fishing tournament event that benefits the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center at Children’s of Alabama, which offers patient and family care for cardiovascular services. There will be door prizes galore and some family friendly fun for the sidelines. Of course, there will be a payout for biggest catches. The fishing will begin on Saturday, May 6th as early as 5:30am. Weigh-in will start at later that afternoon. All ages are invited to experience the free Family Fun Zone activities in the afternoon as well.

    The Superheroes 5K/ 1M & Fun Run is the National Children’s Advocacy Center’s annual event to raise funds and awareness to fight child abuse. More than 6 million children are affected in the US each year, with a report made every 10 seconds. The Superheroes 5K/ 1M & Fun Run provides funding for local programs and services and advocacy efforts that will improve the lives of children affected by child abuse. A free Family Block Party on the NCAC Campus will be held throughout the event featuring food, inflatables, game and activities for kids of ALL ages. Superhero costumes are encouraged. Whether you are as fast as “The Flash” or as slow and steady as a “Ninja Turtle”, this race is for you.

    Nearly 4 million babies are born in the U.S. every year, and each one needs us. The money you raise will be a lifeline for moms and babies near you and across the country. Join more than 1,000 people at Charger Park at UAH in support of moms at every stage from preconception to post-delivery with research, programs and education—and it all comes together with a celebration at March for Babies on Saturday, April 21st. We walk (and run) to give EVERY BABY a fighting chance. Thanks to all our walkers/runners, donors and volunteers who have accepted the challenge to help fight premature birth, birth defects and infant loss. We cannot achieve our mission without each one of you! The 2018 March for Babies will highlight the strength of families affected by premature birth, birth defects and the loss of a child, celebrate the strides we’ve made towards accomplishing our mission and applaud the fundraising efforts of our donors. More than 1,000 individuals will come together at Charger Park at UAH to support the March of Dimes with the goal of raising a total of $300,000 for a healthier future for babies. Festival area & dDonation turn-in opens 8AM, with Opening Ceremonies starting at 8:30 a.m.  The March & Run for Babies beginning at at 9:15 a.m. Festival activities and award announcements continue until close at 11:30 a.m. We will continue our Superhero Sprint this year for all of our amazing kids (ages 1-10) beginning at 9AM. The Superhero Sprint is a kids “fun run” that will be implemented at all March for Babies walk sites, and puts the March of Dimes “mission in motion.” We can’t wait to see you there!

    Join Lowe Mill A&E as we host our second Earth Day Festival. Focused around our growing community garden, the event will include a day filled with activities. Help with tree maintenance and garden harvest. Bring house plant clippings to trade with other attendees. Partake in our seed swap. Farmer Greg and Mike the Gardener will be on site to guide volunteers throughout the day. Over the course of several years, Mike and Greg have cultivated the land into a sustainable organic garden. Learn more about their efforts and future work with the Lowe Mill A&E Community Garden. The day will end with an outdoor potluck and a burn. In addition to work in the garden, we are asking attendees to bring plant donations to aid in the development of outdoor spaces at the Mill. Provide some color and foster growth at Lowe Mill A&E by bringing plants and trees that we can plant around our facility.
