Looking for a good excuse to pull out your killer Stranger Things costumes? (Who else is excited about season 2?) We’ve got a few ideas for local gatherings this Halloween!

Huntsville Ghost Walksghostwalk

Tours begin in front of historic Harrison Brothers Hardware store which is also where you purchase your tickets. There are both walking and trolley tours, and while no one jumps out at you, it is after all a ghost walk – so be mindful of how easily your little ones might be scared!

Decatur Ghost Walks

Every Saturday in October, take a guided tour through Decatur’s haunted past. Hear stories from the Civil War, a tragic accidental death, the angry ghost of Simp McGhee, and much more. Perhaps someone from the past is watching you! Tours begin on the steps of the Old State Bank on Bank Street, with tickets (cash only) available 30 minutes beforehand.

Athens Haunt Walks

Tour guides will tell you ghost stories of paranormal activity at 13 local structures. Hear about the college student who fell to her death and is said to still roam the halls at Athens State University’s Founders Hall. Each walk is approximately 90 minutes and a one-mile walking distance. Advanced tickets ($5.00 each cash or check only) are required and are available for purchase at the Athens-Limestone Visitors Center. Spooky Halloween Makeup & Prop Classes

This is a free, family-friendly event for the ultimate Halloween fans! These spooktacular demos will take place outside Halloween Express on the lower level of the mall. Check out in-depth tutorials by special effects makeup professional, John Harris, and other great Halloween Express Huntsville professionals. Learn how to do lifelike makeup to look like a zombie, ghost, goblin, and more. Hear from Halloween Express props expert, Ronnie Young, on how to take an average $5 prop and turn it into one that looks like a $300 prop! There will be a kids corner for families to play with coloring sheets and candy! A few lucky kids will be selected to participate in a Junior Face Off Competition where kids will get a random bag of costume makeup and props. They will then have a time limit to do their best work on their parents. The winner will receive a Halloween Express Gift card!

Saturday Scientist: Glowing & Exploding Pumpkins

Spooky physical and chemical reactions allow your pumpkins to glow and explode before your eyes! Join us for a special Halloween Saturday Scientist, which is a children’s series typically held on the second Saturday of each month at 11:30 a.m. for the Saturday Scientist series, an educational series featuring activities recommended for ages 6-9. Reserve your seat at the main ticket desk upon your arrival. Museum members may enter the Davidson Center for Space Exploration.

Maple Hill Cemetery Strollmaple hill cemetery

This Maple Hill Cemetery event has grown to be one of the largest living history strolls in the nation, with over 75 costumed characters, traditional music, special exhibits, an expanded antique auto display, and student scavenger hunts. There will be at least a dozen new characters featured this year. Water and rest facilities will be provided, as well as a parking shuttle from the downtown courthouse square from 1-5 p.m. The metered parking spaces and municipal garages downtown are free to the public on Sunday! Please remember that pets are prohibited, and for your safety, do not lean, sit or stand on the monuments.

Monrovia Public Library Halloween Party

Haunted Hill is a Haunt for Charity put on by volunteers from PAS Angels Squad with all proceeds going to charity! This year Henry’s lab will be at Camp Pop-A-Squat, Inc. and will feature a hayride as well as multiple areas for a variety of ages: a small graveyard (G-rated), big haunted graveyard (PG13), morticians lab (PG13+), and haunted campground (rated R. No matter what type of scare you are looking for, bring the family! Please note that parking is limited and groups are encouraged.

The Great Pumpkin Carving Contest at Lowe Mill

We kickoff our weekend of Halloween festivities with The Great Pumpkin Carving Contest featuring live music, food trucks, pumpkin painting for the kiddos, and more. Our second annual event invites the community to compete for an array of prizes. Bring your own tools and the perfect pumpkin. Choose your category and get to carving. Who will create the scariest, the funniest, or the greatest pumpkin of them all? Once you’re done with your masterpiece, place it on the Lowe Mill A&E dock, and let the voting begin. We’ll light them as the sun sets. Winners will be determined by the public. Vote for your favorite during the event. Winning pumpkins will be announced at the end of the night. Bluegrass group David Davis and the Warrior River Boys will provide musical entertainment throughout the evening. Bring your own carving tools!

Build A Bat House Day

Huntsville Bat House Project’s 3rd Annual ‘Build A Bat House Day’ will be October 28th at Lowe Mill A&E in RR2, outside the south building next to Pizzelles Confections and Vertical House Records. Teen Zombie Prom

Save the date! We are gearing up for our annual Teen Masquerade Ball, and this one is shaping up to be the best yet. Teens and tweens ages 12-18 are invited to the Downtown Huntsville Library, 915 Monroe St., on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 p.m. til midnight to enjoy this special after-hours event just for them. This hike is for the dogs!  The Humane Society of Greater Huntsville will bring along some adorable, costumed dogs ready for Halloween and a forever home.  Take an adoptable dog on a test-hike or bring your own pup along in festive Halloween attire! Spooktacular 5K & Monster Mile

Huntsville’s Fleet Feet Sports invites you to join runners, walkers, ghosts, and goblins of all ages at the Spooktacular 5K Run and Monster Mile on October 28. Get crafty and creative and participate in the costume contest or, better yet, compete in costume! The 5K will begin promptly at 8AM with the 1 mile at 9AM. Free Halloween Portraits and Contest

Portrait Innovations is pleased to offer parents with children dressed in costumes free portraits during its Halloween event taking place at all Portrait Innovations studios Monday, Oct. 30. Photo opportunities run from 3 to 7 p.m., and parents will receive two free 5×7 portraits and the digital images of each child dressed in costume. Employees will also be handing out candy to get everyone in the Halloween spirit. Following the free event, parents can also submit their children’s portrait as part of a fun Portrait Innovations photo contest for a chance to win one of three $1,000 cash prizes. Blossomwood Witches Ride

The Blossomwood Witches Ride (BWR) is a fun bike ride through the neighborhood of Blossomwood. Women dress up as witches, ride their brooms (bikes) and throw candy to the little monsters (kids) along the posted route. ALL children are welcome to come out and enjoy the free candy. Children are asked to be accompanied by an adult to safely walk on the sidewalks while the witches fly by. Although we do proudly carry the Blossomwood name (due to location), witches from anywhere are welcome to ride!

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is hosting its third annual Halloween Spooky Space Spectacular Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 8 p.m. This family-friendly event takes place in the Davidson Center for Space Exploration’s Saturn V Hall, and includes a costume contest, hands-on science activities and a magic and science show with Dr. Osborn. The Space Shot, G-Force and Kids Cosmos Lunar Lander simulators are also part of the fun, weather permitting. Madison’s Insane Nightmare on Skate Street

Trick or Treat from 5-8PM! This fun event will delight you at designated places in the park before you make your way through the gates of Insanity.
