Fall is a splendid time to enjoy a play, catch a concert, or watch a special show with your family! Below you’ll find our list of family-friendly performances taking place Fall of 2015.

Concerts on the Dock

Concerts on the Dock are back! This free eclectic Friday night concert series is family and pet friendly so bring your dog leashes, lawn chairs, dancing shoes, and hula hoops. A $2 per car parking donation is requested and carpooling is encouraged.

Comic Science Improv

These hilarious improv shows are appropriate for all audiences, and consist of a collection of short scenes in which they play improv “games” — anything from speaking only in questions to reinterpreting favorite movies — based on suggestions from the audience. You tell them what to do, and they make it hilarious. If you’ve ever seen “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” “Thank God You’re Here” or “Trust Us With Your Life,” you have some idea of what CSI does, but the shows are made better by the fact that scene suggestions are coming from YOU, and not some Hollywood studio audience!

Celebrate the beginning of fall with A Hoot in the Night owl show! The owls are brought to us by the Alabama 4-H Center Coosa River Science School. They will teach us the history of owls and why they are beneficial to our ecosystem. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Lawn chairs and blankets are also welcome.

ENGLAND: A Sea Symphony

Expose your kids to the oldest, continuously operating professional orchestra in the state of Alabama – the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. This season will take you around the world, with your first stop being England. Britten’s opera, Peter Grimes, tells the story of an English fisherman, and Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony is based on Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra is joined by the amazing Tiffany Bostic-Brown, Terrance Brown, and the Huntsville Community Chorus for an outstanding launch of the 61st season. A great treat for music lovers. Families with younger kids can get a sneak peek on select concert rehearsals that are much friendly on your wallet.

Dave from Animal Trax is teaming up with KidVenture to host Dave’s Safari. This 1.5 hours of hands-on, learning fun features a huge variety of animals, including reptiles. If you ever had the opportunity to see a “Dave” show, you know that he is beyond entertaining! Parents and kids alike will have a great time. You must buy your tickets in advance at KidVenture or Animal Trax. The first ticket covers 1 child and 1 adult for $15; each person after that is $7 (prices go up after September 20). You do NOT want to miss this show! Dave has “retired” from show business, but is coming back just for this event.

Sensational Sunday Concert

The Snow Queen

The wicked Snow Queen casts her icy spell on the world, turning young Kay’s heart to ice and making him an eternal prisoner in her Ice Palace at the very top of the world. Gerda, Kay’s friend, braves many dangers to save Kay and break Winter’s grip. Along the way, Gerda encounters talking ravens, the evil Cobweb Spider, a prince and princess, a band of robbers and the wild robber-girl, greedy polar bears and the brave reindeer who carries Gerda across the Arctic wastes. The fast-paced adventure story by Hans Christian Andersen is adapted by Stuart Paterson.

Carnival of the Animals: Step right up for a performance that is fun for all ages and an engaging introduction to the arts of music and dance. Composed in 1886 by Camille Saint-Saens,Le Carnival des Animeaux is a farcical piece intended to express the some of the silly traits shared by humans and animals. Huntsville Ballet Artistic Director, Philip Otto reimagines this piece for modern audiences in a way that is guaranteed to entrance and entertain ballet enthusiasts and those new to the art.

Pulcinella: An original ballet offering a humorous take on the drama surrounding love and lovers by Phillip Otto set to the music of Igor Stravinsky.

Land of the Sweets

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

This dramatization of C.S. Lewis’ classic tale faithfully recreates the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion, his struggle with The White Witch, and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the exciting, never-to-be-forgotten, Narnia. The intense action features chases, duels, and escapes as the witch is determined to keep Narnia in her possession and to end the reign of Aslan. This story of love, faith, courage, and giving with its triumph of good over evil is a true celebration of life.

Halloween Magic with HSO

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra performs Halloween Magic, featuring world-renowned illusionist Michael Grandinetti. There will be pre-concert activities for families such as face painting, coloring, ghost bowling, a costume contest, and ring toss. The pre-concert activities start at 6:30 pm and the concert starts at 7:30 pm. Michael Grandinetti will be doing six illusions throughout the show. As he amazes you, the orchestra will entertain you with the haunting Night on Bald Mountain, the bewitching In the Hall of the Mountain King, the most exciting themes from Harry Potter movies, and many more selections. The whole family will love Halloween Magic!

Huntsville is so proud to be home to Broadway Theatre League – they provide professional live theatre for citizens of the Tennessee Valley area and their season looks AMAZING. Their Fall show is Bullets Over Broadway, the story of a young playwright who, in desperate need of financial backing for his next show, accepts an offer he can’t refuse from a mobster looking to please his showgirl girlfriend. Recommended for ages 13 and up, this is a great performance to share with your teens. Be sure to check out the rest of BTL’s season HERE.
