This week’s Roundup is BURSTING at the seams with all the best free and cheap things to do with your family – so much that we had to list not five, but six events to fit it all in! There’s something for everyone: disco balls, live music, bike rides, museums, a global fashion show, and jumping frogs. Yep, a la Mark Twain style. You can’t get any better than that, folks!
While not entirely free, we simply must mention the Safari Adventure Stage Show at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens on Saturday at 11:00AM and 1:00PM. This show is extremely popular, and is a bargain at $2 per person for members plus admission for non-members. Your little animal lovers can see a serval cat, a gibbon, a red kangaroo, a monitor lizard, an alligator along with other surprise creatures in the garden amphitheatre. Be sure to get there early for a seat!
Remember, this is just a handful of things happening this weekend. For a complete list of things to do, always check our Event Calendar. It’s also prime-time yard sale season, and you can depend on our Yard Sale Map to help you find the best weekend deals and sales.
If you’ve got an event that is open to the public and free (or really cheap) and you’d like us to add it to our calendar submit the details here.[list type="numlist"]
Friday from 9:30 – 11:30AM:Grab the trike and your little one and head south of The Parkway for one of the best-kept secrets of preschooldom. Aldersgate opens its skating rink doors, turns on the disco ball, blasts some music and lets the kids ride, skate, and pedal their morning away. Admission is a $5 donation but the nap they’ll take afterward is priceless.
Friday from 6:00 – 9:00PM: This free outdoor concert series is winding down, and if you haven’t been yet the weather is perfect to get one in before they are gone until next Spring. Tonight’s music is provided by The South Carolina Broadcasters, a band that has won blue ribbons at fiddler’s conventions and taken standing ovations in hard core rock-n-roll venues. Picnic suppers, lawn chairs, libations, and well-mannered dogs all welcome.
All Day Saturday: Thanks to the good people at Smithsonian magazine, today is Museum Day Live! all across the nation, and that means you get in free to Sci-Quest Hands-On Science Center and the Space & Rocket Center. Admission is free, however you MUST print out a ticket here to present at the door.
Saturday 9AM – Noon: Kids ages 5-12 can bring their bicycle to Hampton Cove Greenway for a bike decorating contest at this first annual event. A Fun Ride/Walk will follow, as well as a Fun Yoga For Kids session afterward. Complementary water provided, but you must register in advance so they know how many to expect.
Saturday from 9AM – 5PM: This week-long celebration of “old-timey” fun is coming to a close and going out with a bang today. Activities will kick off with an antique tractor and car show at 9AM, a street parade at 11AM and David Davis and The Warrior River Boys will provide live entertainment from 12:30 to 1:30PM. Afternoon activities will include a best-dressed contest, pig calling contest, frog jumping contest, and a greased pig contest. A variety of food and craft vendors will also be featured. Check our calendar for full details.
Saturday 10AM – 5PM: Go around the world without ever leaving Huntsville! UAH is hosting the free event at Spragins Hall, and will feature a global fashion show, international food samplings, live music and performances by the Little German Band; the Jasmine Dance Ensemble; the Scottish/Irish music of The Sullivans; and Bollywood-style Dancing! There will be hands-on children’s activities, from making boomerangs and origami samurai helmets to Mehndi (henna “tattoo”) art, paper fan/umbrella calligraphy projects, and a chance to kiss the Blarney Stone.
