Weekend Roundup August 16-19
This is it. THE LAST WEEKEND BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS. We’re here to help you make it count – grab the kids and make the last of the summer memories before the homework piles in. There’s no shortage of events to choose from this weekend, and, as always, we’ve listed the top free or cheap ones that won’t break your budget.

Green Street Market & the LAST Sidewalk Arts Stroll
Thursday from 4:00 – 6:00PM: After you browse the market produce and get a homemade popsicle, the Children’s Corner at the Greene Street Market will be making Suncatchers with the kids out of reusable plastic bags. Walk a few blocks to the square and you’ll get to experience the last Sidewalk Arts Stroll of the season – it’s always full of street entertainers, great arts & crafts, and interesting people.

Jump Over to a Back to School Bash
Friday at 3:00 – 7:00PM: Jump To It Clubhouse on Hughes Road in Madison is hosting a back-to-school bash to celebrate the end of summer. Bring a donation of school supplies to gain admission to indoor and outdoor inflatables and snacks. Special guests Cinderella and Sponge Bob will also be there to meet and greet the kids.

Waiting for Superman
Friday at 6:00PM: The Village of Promise and 100X Church are sponsoring a family viewing of the groundbreaking documentary that follows a handful of promising kids through the public education system. Other weekend back-to-school events the Village of Promise is hosting are a Luminary Ceremony at Sparkman Homes and a Student Blessing Ceremony to get the year kicked off right.

Community Awareness for Youth Celebration
Saturday at 10:00AM – 2:00PM: We wrote all about it Wednesday, and this year’s CAFY event is sure to be a blast! Youth 12-18 and their families will enjoy inspiring speakers, food, a rock-climbing wall, live music, portable video game unit, and giveaways.

Do Some Yoga with the Kids
Saturday from 10:00 AM to 3:00PM: Yoga Fire on Slaughter Road is having an Open House and celebrating with free yoga classes, massage sessions, and giveaways. Featuring classes like hot yoga and ballerina pilates, Yoga Fire wants participants to feel strong, energetic and clear. You can learn the Tree, Cobra, and Sun pose with your whole family!

Junior Roller Derby League Bout
Saturday at 5:00PM: You seriously don’t want to miss the first time head to head battle for Alabama junior derby bragging rights do you? The RAD Recruits (Alabama’s 1st junior derby team) are hosting the Deep South Derby All-Stars Bottlerockets (Alabama’s 2nd junior derby team). The Bottlerockets are coming up all the way from Mobile, so they need a HUGE crowd to come cheeer on BOTH of these teams playing this great sport! Bring a lawn chair to Aldersgate on the Parkway for all the fast-packed, family-friendly action. Kids 10 and under are free.

There is a train excursion at the North Alabama Railroad Museum on Chase Road. It is Saturday, Aug 18 at 10AM. The website says it’s a one hour train ride. http://www.northalabamarailroadmuseum.com/sched.htm
Adults are $12 and Children under 12 are $8.

I’ve been trying to get to the sidewalk arts stroll and haven’t made it yet. I hope the kids are cooperative this evening so we can go. Thanks for all the great information!
