It is an ACTION PACKED weekend in the Rocket City – it’s almost like everyone is cramming all the summer fun they can into the last few weeks before school starts. (Which is 21 days, 15 hours and 52 minutes before back-to-school hits our house. But who’s counting?) So it’s a good thing we’ve corralled all the best free and/or inexpensive things to do into this week’s version of the Weekend Round Up. Between movies, music, street fairs, and tomatoes, you can be sure you’ll work in some more great summer memories with The Fam.
Thursday from 9:30AM – 12:30PM: Not free, but definitely notable. Beginning at 9:30AM the staff from the Space & Rocket Center’s exhibit, Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age will be at the Monaco Theater for a special showing of Ice Age 4. At $6.25 per person the first 100 kids at the event may participate in a special Ice Age themed craft and the first 100 kids to show a movie ticket for the 10:30AM show of Ice Age 4 will receive a coupon valid for a free boxed popcorn.
Thursday & Friday at 6:30PM: Thursday night brings Madison Gazebo Concerts on Main Street in downtown Madison with Southern Splendor Barbershop Quartet and Que Rico. Friday night is Concerts on the Dock with the folk duo, The Danberrys – and while you’re there you can see the amazing Tarp Lake at Lowe Mill. For both concerts & locations feel free to bring your picnic suppers, lawn chairs, beverages of choice, and bug spray.
Saturday Morning from 8:00AM – 10:00AM: Start your Saturday off with the quest for the perfect tomato at the Madison County Farmer’s Market Tomato Festival. Farmers donate the tomatoes from their crops to layer on bread with mayo and salt and pepper. Come have a tomato sandwich and wash it down with free cold bottled water.
Saturday from 10:00AM – 2:30PM: After your tomato sandwich, head to the Hogan Family YMCA in Madison and witness demonstrations by Home Depot for adults and children; martial arts, Zumba dance, Yoga, ballet and more. Mayor Paul Finley will be present at his ever popular “Ask the Mayor” booth. Bring the kids for the water inflatables and free hotdogs, tours of HEMSI ambulance, Madison Fire Truck and Mobile SWAT Unit. You’ll find a LifeSouth Blood Drive and Lambert Record Center will be hosting a paper shredding opportunity. Home Depot is giving away a Weber Grill among many other exciting door prizes. All free!
Saturday from 4:00PM – 8:00PM: We’ve saved the best for last… This event put on by the Little Gym starts at 4PM on Saturday and promises to be full of fun for children of any age. In addition to the entertainment provided by the Jason Albert Band, a dance-off with area city mascots, and facepainting, there’s a raffle! Stop by and if it’s too hot, step inside the Little Gym which will be open for free play after 5PM, and Providence businesses like Sweet Cece’s and Mellow Mushroom will be great places to stop in for supper. This FREE event will take place at the Village of Providence – be sure to stop by and say hello to Rocket City Mom at our tent.
