School Based Program at Big Brothers Big Sisters Receives 2016 Learning Expo Grant

If you joined us at Earlyworks on January 30 for the 2016 Learning Expo then you know we had TONS of fun sharing information about area educational options and resources. Our new location was such a great fit that we are already planning a return in early 2017.

[sws_pullquote_right]We’re looking for non-profits that are helping elevate the educational experience of area children. [/sws_pullquote_right] What you may not know is that thanks to our partnership with Earlyworks and presenting sponsor Progress Bank, this year’s expo raised more money than in any previous year! Thanks to the hard work of so many, we were able to donate $5,000 to this year’s Community Education Grant winner.

Since it’s inception in 2013 the proceeds from each year’s Learning Expo have been donated to various local educational non-profits including Village of Promise, Huntsville Madison County Public Library, Sci-Quest, Fantasy Children’s Playhouse, Free 2 Teach and Space and Rocket Center. Our criteria for a community education grant is pretty simple. We’re looking for non-profits that are helping elevate the educational experience of area children. So the school based program at Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama was an obvious choice for this year’s award.

One Hour a Week Can Change a Life

Through this core program, volunteers offer children individualized time and attention on a consistent basis at the child’s school. Teachers help identify those children who can most benefit from an extra caring adult in their lives.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama is looking for adults who can commit to one hour a week each school year. Whether they play board games, or read the newspaper together, these relationships help promote a positive school experience for the child: good attendance, positive peer and adult relationships, a positive attitude, and academic enrichment. As the friendship evolves over time, volunteers and children discover ways to make school and learning fun. When matches continue from one school year to the next, volunteers experience the satisfaction of watching their Littles achieve success in school.

Our decision to support this program financially was an easy one and we hope that by sharing this information we can encourage others to support it as well. While money is always a welcome resource, what Big Brothers and Big Sisters of North Alabama could use most are caring men and women looking to offer their time to help improve the lives of area children.
