Smart to Speak at NCAC Fundraiser
Elizabeth Smart. It’s a name that anyone old enough to watch the news in 2002 knows well. The story of her kidnapping and eventual discovery along with the ordeal she went through at the tender age of 14 is well known and unfortunately, all too common. According to the U.S. Department of Justice nearly 800,000 children younger than 18 are missing each year, or an average of 2,185 children reported missing each day. While not all of these missing children are kidnapped by strangers like Smart was (some are runaways while others are taken by family members) their plights are none-the-less troubling and painful both for them and their families.
Luckily, organizations like the National Children’s Advocacy Center (whose headquarters are right here in Huntsville) are focused on helping reduce those numbers by bringing awareness to this issue as well as resources for prevention and support for families dealing with such crisis. To help the NCAC raise much needed funds, Crestwood’s Healthy Woman program is bringing Elizabeth Smart to Huntsville to speak on June 28th. Smart will talk about her kidnapping experience and how she overcame it and moved on with her life. She’ll also discuss issues such as overcoming extreme adversity, maintaining hope, and stopping victimization.
The event will be held at the Jackson Center from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM. Tickets for the event are $50 and include a 3 course lunch with all proceeds donated (locally) to the National Children’s Advocacy Center and the Kids to Love Foundation.
