Sunny Street Cafe’

Much like Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson, I love breakfast food. My kids are very early risers and we’re constantly looking for good places serving breakfast on our end of town for the weekend.

When Sunny Street Cafe’ opened on the corner of Jeff & Slaughter Road (not to be confused with Sunrise Pizza located there too) I knew we had to give it a try. The new owners of Sunny Street have completely renovated the space where Pauli’s Bar & Grill used to be, transforming it into a bright, open space with ample booth & table seating. There’s also a closed-off room available for private parties.

Known for its breakfast food, Sunny Street Cafe’ is also open for lunch until 2:30, seven days a week. My family of four chose a Saturday morning at 9:30 for our first visit, and the place was pretty full. However, we didn’t have to wait at all and the hostess showed us to a booth, followed by a friendly server who already had a pot of coffee to offer, as well as kid’s menus with crayons. SCORE!

The kids menu was dino-themed and had games to play & dinosaurs to color on the flip side.

My kids chose the Triceratops French Toast and Dinosaur Pancakes – both included their choice of bacon or sausage as well as a drink for $3.99. Not too shabby! The boys were super excited to see their breakfast actually in the shape of a dinosaur when it arrived and portions were generous. There’s also a variety of smoothies and healthy choices for kids like fresh fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, and granola.

Outside of the kid’s menu, there are the usual breakfast combos, customized omelettes, Eggs Benedict, waffles, a variety of pancakes, and french toast. The House Specialties looked interesting, and our server said the Stuffed Biscuits & Gravy were a popular choice: biscuit loaves stuffed with sausage, green peppers, onions and cheese, smothered in a house made sausage gravy and served with two eggs. I was feeling adventurous and gave it a try. While it was good, it was far from the traditional biscuits & gravy this Southern girl was raised on, and I’ll probably stick to their famous pancakes next time.

Lunch offerings include burgers, sandwiches, salads, wraps, soups, chicken salad, quiche, and even a grilled veggie flatbread.

Sunny Street also provides catering and private events for your group or organization. A private room for large parties at an affordable restaurant can be hard to find these days.

Our verdict: the kids were happy, the coffee was good, the service quick and friendly. Most of all it was a quality meal that was affordable – we were able to order full breakfast for four with drinks for about $25 (doesn’t include the tip).
