Parent Review: Big Ed’s Pizzeria

My son Aaron and I took on Big Ed’s Pizzeria for you, our dear Rocket City Mom readers, last week.

Big Ed’s is one of the oldest continuously operating eateries in Huntsville, serving its first slice in 1961. Now run by its namesake’s three children, it has been at its current location near the southwest corner of University and the Parkway for a few years.

All of Big Ed’s pizzas and calzones come out of the same gas ovens that have been used since the ’60s. We’re talking traditional recipes, with from-scratch sauce and dough, ready to please.

Pizza and calzones start as low as the $7 range for a 10” cheese pizza or a single-filling calzone. There are 14 different toppings available for the build-your-own set, and there are eight different custom house specials, including a loaded vegetarian offering.

We went with garlic cheesy bread for our appetizer, which came out promptly and at ideal temperature. It was fresh and delicious, with wonderful flavor. We had to take it easy to be sure we had room for the main event. Mozzarella sticks are also available. Both appetizers are served with Big Ed’s homemade sauce.

Now, keep in mind there were just two of us. But, in the interests of getting a good menu sampling for this review and taking leftovers to the other half of our family, we ordered way more than enough for ourselves. The 12” Meat-Licious was up first.

That’s pepperoni, beef, ham, pork sausage, and Italian sausage. The smell was amazing. I reminded Aaron that I needed a photo before we started eating it. There may have been an audible sigh.

Next up was a formidable calzone, with Italian sausage, onions, and green peppers.

Now I suppose had we waited 30 minutes or so (yeah, right), these might have firmed up a bit and we’d have been able to pick them up from the start. As they were, we needed our forks.

Such are the hazards of truly fresh and homemade crust. Each became more tolerant of being handled after we ate on them a bit.

All of the ingredients were obviously fresh, and the flavor was excellent. Big Ed’s offerings epitomize why you need to go out for pizza once in a while. This experience just doesn’t come to your house in a box.

We managed half of each one, and took the rest with us. Those leftovers were snarfed by the time I got home from work the next day. I’m glad I didn’t think to look forward to them.

As for the rest of the menu, there are a few different salads available, as well as toasted sub sandwiches. Beer is available, including a healthy contingent of local brews. Dessert is not featured on the regular menu, but Big Ed’s is known to have a dessert “for a limited time” every now and again, so be sure to ask. There is no dedicated kids’ menu in evidence, though a 10” pie, agreeably topped, would make a wonderful dinner for two little ones.

After you seat yourself, Big Ed’s is a full service experience, including paying at the table. The dining room looks to seat perhaps 60 comfortably. However, there’s not really anywhere to wait if there are no tables, so plan accordingly if you’re pressed for time. Highchairs and booster seats are available. There are no changing tables.

Big Ed’s is clean but decidedly low-overhead. This is probably not the place for your Red Hat Society meeting. However, it’s ideal for a casual, delicious, and reasonably-priced family night out. If your Huntsville pizza education doesn’t yet include Big Ed’s, make haste!
