Valentine’s Day Books for Children

I love giving books as Valentines…cavity and guilt-free is the way to go in my opinion. Plus books are the love notes that never stop giving!

Below are my favorites to read aloud to your sweet boy or girl.

Great Valentine Books Kids Will Love

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli

© Paul Yalowitz
My all-time favorite, and not just for Valentine’s Day. Mr. Hatch is a seemingly dull loner who works in a shoelace factory. He never smiles, and rarely speaks to his neighbors… until a mysterious package arrives with a note, “Somebody Loves You”.

This picture book illustrates how important it is to feel loved and make others feel they are loved. Kindness is a powerful and contagious thing, even under mixed-up circumstances. Now you and your valentine can enjoy watching actor Hector Elizondo read Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch on www.storylineonline.net. (You’ll want to bookmark that site!)

The I Love You Book by Todd Parr

Todd Parr’s dynamic, colorful illustrations are the perfect companion to his straightforward (and sometimes silly!) stories. These are great books to read to toddlers for this very reason, but older kids can definitely appreciate his jokes. My favorite page? “I love you when you hide my keys”.

Amelia Bedelia’s First Valentine by Herman Parish
This spunky girl has a new look thanks to Peggy Parish’s nephew, Herman. Because of the wordplay and puns, I would recommend it to kids in 1st – 3rd grade, or you’ll have a lot of ‘splainin to do to the preschooler.
